Artist tells dream stories at new exhibition

Painter Tran Thanh Canh’s Khu vuon bo quen (Forgotten garden) displayed at an exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City
An exhibition of 36 paintings by student painter Tran Thanh Canh opened in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday.

Titled Nhung cau chuyen cua giac mo (Stories of the dream), the works are a combination of abstract style and modern digital printing techniques on do paper (traditional hand-made paper from northern Vietnam).

With illusory names including Con ngua co tich (The horse from fairy tales), Khu vuon bo quen (Forgotten garden) and Hoa hong cho tinh yeu kiep truoc (Rose of love from a previous incarnation), the pictures are inspired by images and details taken from the artist’s dreams.

Canh, who is a student of the HCMC University of Fine Arts, said he always expects to dream every time he goes to sleep.

“A dream can be an embodiment of our memories, a sign or a message from the future,” Canh said.

The event will continue until December 18 at the Van Gallery, located at 2B Chu Manh Trinh Street, District 1.
